Urban Gardening

by Brooke on April 17, 2012

While growing up in a small town in Indiana, my family had a large plot of land that we grew crops in every year.  One of the main crops we grew was sweet corn.  However, there is more than corn in Indiana (Indiana Beach Amusement Park reference…anyone?).

One year, my sister and I tried to be adventurous and grow watermelons.  Because our plot was behind a college, the watermelons got stolen.  I remember that day so clearly.  As we drove up to the plot, we discovered that our watermelons were no where to be found.  It was very depressing for a six and nine year old!  My parents just bought us some watermelons to make up for it…but it wasn’t the same.  We wanted to eat what we had worked hard at growing.

I don’t have a lot of space in Chicago, but I do miss growing my own food!  This past weekend, I planted a few herbs and vegetables.  It  doesn’t matter how little space you have…all that matters is that you use it and GET PLANTING.  Below is a before shot of my small deck covered in planting materials.

It really was easy and didn’t take that much time.  First, I added fresh planting soil to all the pots and cleaned out any unwanted debris.

Then, I determined the layout of my mini garden and dug holes for all the plants.

I planted basil, parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, tomatoes, and spinach.  I still want to plant dill, mint, and lettuce.  Pictured above is my spinach pot.

After I finished planting, I watered each pot.

Here is my finished little urban garden. I can’t wait to enjoy these herbs and vegetables!  If you don’t have any outdoor space check out these hanging floating gardens for your house, apartment, or condo.

Remember, use the space you have and get planting!
