Trying to lose weight is a lot like taking a flight. Just follow the rules and regulations and you will get to your destination!
When packing for a trip, you have to make sure that your clothes, toiletries, etc. fit into luggage that does not exceed the weight limit so you don’t get charged extra fees. If Americans used this rule when eating …many would be at a healthier weight. When you are full, stop eating! When you can’t fit into your clothes, don’t try to pack more food into your body. You are already exceeding your limit, so start “unpacking some weight.”
I took a trip recently and one of the people I was traveling with made the comment, “If my luggage exceeds the 50 pound limit I get charged extra fees for overweight, but if an individual exceeds his or her healthy weight, no fees apply and I lose my arm rest.” I thought that was an interesting statement…yes it is not very politically correct and a bit insensitive, but the point was made.
Don’t you also just love the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on luggage? NOT! Well this rule is still a good lesson in weight loss. Even the s*** we take on, needs to be the right portion size. Am I right? So control your food portions as well. If you want to lose weight this rule is KEY! If you don’t watch your portion sizes you’ll miss your flight and be left grounded at the terminal.
Once you’ve boarded your plane you get bombarded with a slew of do’s and don’ts. Do fasten your seat belt! Don’t smoke. Do store your stuff carefully in the overhead compartment. For example, if you need a gym membership, get it before you start. If you need extra Tupperware to pack your healthy lunch, go out and buy it. Make sure your ducks are in a row before you take flight in your weight loss journey. When starting a new weight loss program it is especially important to be safe. Consult with your doctor and dietitian on which program is healthy for you. Don’t just tune- out and get sucked into the hype of simple fixes (e.g. the newest quack pill, supplements, or surgery). LISTEN to the directions and the qualified experts before deciding what is right for you.
When I think of airplane food I also get reminded of another important piece of weight loss advice: Don’t just eat the food because it there and it is free. Whether it is laying out in the office kitchen, offered to you at a party, found on the ground (eww), or given to you during a flight you can say no if you’re not actually hungry. Remember, “JUST SAY NO.” What a great phrase. If you are full or the food looks really really unhealthy and you are trying to lose weight just say “no thank you.”
Case closed.
No guilt.
Have a safe and healthy journey.

“When you can’t fit in your clothes…” Gaining weight isn’t a sudden surprise! You know it’s happening! So when I hear of someone who lost weight successfully, is enjoying their new body but then gains most or all of it back, I have to wonder WHY didn’t you pay attention to this un-ignore-able warning sign!! I’d have to get a psychologist to explain this one to me!
Haha! Love the last line I think our clothes are the best tool we can use to monitor weight gain!
Great post! This is so true! Especially the comment about eating food just cause it’s there. My flight last week they gave out pretzels and nuts. It makes you wonder how many people just eat them cause they are there.
Thanks Kristen! I just save the extra snacks they give me for another time if i am not hungry.
I’m so glad you commented on my blog because I love yours! First of all…the title is hysterical! Second of all, I love what you stand for! This is an excellent post and every point you made is true! If you aren’t hungry…WHY ARE YOU EATING! Portion checks please!
Thank you I am so happy you liked the post too!
