Fall Into Farmers’ Markets

Fall is upon us, but that is no reason to give up on your love for Farmers’ Markets!  This past weekend, the Logan Square Farmers’ Market moved indoors to continue to support local farmers, bakeries, and other foodie businesses.  The Logan Square Farmers’ Market moved to a new location and is now inside an old bakery at 2755 N. Milwaukee Avenue.  Despite the market moving indoors last weekend, there were still a few vendors outside selling their produce.

It is hard not to get inspired to cook, try new foods, or create new recipes when starring at all the wonderful produce around you at a farmers’ market.

Here is my collection of farmers’ market goods.  This looks like a soup and side dish to me…

I cooked a large pot of Farmers’ Market vegetable and cheese tortellini soup.  I did not buy the pasta at the farmers’ market, but it was a nice addition to my low sodium and italian seasoned soup.  The cheese tortellini was also great way to add carbohydrates and protein to the dish.

I also baked the squash with one tablespoon of margarine and cinnamon for our dinner the night before.  We ate this tasty side dish with a salad and hamburger for dinner!

What farmers’ market inspires you?

I see that you bought some pasta there. What is your opinion on gluten in our diets? There’s a lot of opinions out there, so a dietitian’s point of view would be helpful.
Thanks.

Hi Jay,
Thanks for leaving a comment! Yes, I did. I love pasta :) Unless, an individual has a medical diagnosis that requires them to eliminate gluten I don’t recommend them doing it. I understand how confusing it can be with all the new gluten-free products out there, since it has become the next weight loss fad to hit the market.
