Dessert or Bust

My roommate and I planned a trip to Puerto VallartaMexico a few months ago.  Prior to the trip, we  made a bet with each other that the other person couldn’t go 15 days without dessert.  The bet was for $100, so literally it was dessert or bust (as in my wallet).

We decided to start the bet the first day of April, since our trip started on the 16th.  Now, I don’t recall ever going a day in my life without some form of dessert.   I am the type of person that doesn’t overindulge and we certainly didn’t do this for weight loss…it was merely to see if we really needed that kind of added sugar everyday.  We counted pudding, popscicles, baked goods, candy, ice cream, etc. as desserts.  However, we did allow a cup of Lucky Charms or Kettle Corn now and then.  I remember the first time I got a cup of Lucky Charms and milk and sat down next to my roommate; she gave me a look (like you lose) and I was like, “this is cereal!”  She ended up getting a cup after that…haha.

It was an interesting 15 days.  Some days I didn’t miss it and other days of course I had a certain desire for a specific sweet.  And to top it off, I volunteered to make cupcakes for a good friend of mine’s birthday.  I have no idea what I was thinking…haha.  Shown above are the DJ cupcakes I made.  You can bet that my roommate was starring me down the entire time I was making them to to see if I licked the batter, sampled the icing, or sneaked an Oreo.  What made it worse was smelling the peach rings and M&M’s while making the headphones and taking apart Oreos to make the records.  I tried to look at it as an art project and made it through with my wallet unscathed :)

Have you ever tired to go without dessert for longer than 2-3 days?  Surprisingly, I didn’t miss it as much as I thought I would.  Instead of consuming a sweet with very little nutritional value after dinner my snacks were packed with nutrients.

There are so many wonderful healthier options like:

1)  Whole fruits (Banana, peaches, oranges)

2)  Light Cheese stick

3)  Handful of pretzels

4)  Greek yogurt

5)  And of course you can always have veggies

Thankfully, by now I am enjoying my treats in Mexico and will do so in moderation until I return home tomorrow night!

Taking a moment to be mindful of why you think you need or want to eat something can make all the difference in your choices!

Fage Greek Yogurt has become a real treat for me! I transitioned myself from the full fat variety to the Total 2% or Total 0 and enjoy them just as much.

The bet sounds hysterical. You guys were easy on each other allowing sweet cereal. I wrote a dessert post, sort of similar http://foodtrainers.blogspot.com/2011/02/since-when-is-dessert-everyday.html hope you’re having a great time in mexico.
