Everyone believes they are a Nutrition Expert!

It really is amazing how the field of nutrition has become public theory.  Everyone thinks that just because they eat, know how to lose weight, or have a grandmother with diabetes they are a nutrition expert.  This has lead to a high exchange of nutrition misinformation!

Dr. Katz wrote an article that appeared last week in Huffpost Healthy Living that sums up what many Registered Dietitians have been talking about for years.  He goes into detail explaining that, “Actually, No You’re NOT A Nutrition Expert.”   Dr. Katz even touches on what I have been telling clients for years…why would you go to a grocery manager, carpenter, or podiatrist for nutrition advice?   We tend to search out the most highly trained “expert” in all other professions except nutrition?

I love the dietetics field, my colleagues, and clients!  However,  being a Registered Dietitian in an era where everyone thinks they are a nutrition expert is an extremely hard job.  I get challenged daily with questions on nutrition advice clients have gotten from their friend, chiropractor, neighbor, Dr. OZ, etc…

Anecdotal evidence from various sources often sounds very convincing, BUT that doesn’t mean that you should follow their advice.  Everyone is different.  I am sure you have heard that millions of times before; so why are we settling on cookie cutter advice that is not backed by any scientific research?  Without science there are just opinions!

Couldn’t have said it better myself, you’ve hit the nail on the head. Misinformation can be so detrimental to someone’s dietary aims of even dangerous in extreme cases. Glad to find someone with such a sensible approach! I’ve connected with you via my blog page on Twitter @grassrootgrains and I’m looking forward to your future posts!

It is nice for people to avail the necessary information online, which they need to know about the food, diet and nutrition even though they are not nutritionist. I am also glad that dietitians are always there to help people to eliminate their fad diets and relieve whatever problems they have including allergies and other illness related to food.

Hi Lynne,

Thank you for your comment! Yes, it can be hard to weed through all those fad diets without a dietitian at your side :)
