Coupon Crazed

I am all for saving money, but sometimes I am amazed by the crap people buy just because it is on sale or they have a coupon for it. I was looking through the food coupons the other day and noticed that most of them were for foods that lack any nutritional value.  Extreme couponing is now on tv and so many more Americans are trying it.

I understand the thrill of saving money and getting things for free.  However, this free stuff is not benefiting our health…we will pay the price later.  These coupon foods normally contain a high amount of saturated fat, sugar, sodium, and cholesterol; all of which can lead to a variety of health problems.   Healthy food can be inexpensive too!

Do you use a lot of coupons when you shop?

I’ll have to argue that there are plenty of coupons for healthy foods! Yogurt, milk, frozen veggies, olive oil, whole grain bread, even fresh produce! People just need to be smart and not buy something just because there is a coupon for it. I save a ton of money with my coupons and I’m proud of it =)

Hi Krystle! Yes, I do agree that you can find healthy coupon deals, but it seems like the majority are not. Also, I would be curious how the socioeconomic status affects the coupons printed in certain areas. In Chicago, I don’t come across as many healthy coupons as I did living in Champaign, IL.

Since coupons are distributed by manufacturers, they’re always for processed, packaged foods. Discounts on anything fresh will be through store cards like the Dominicks Fresh Values Card and the “Just for U” program you can sign up for.

The handful of times I’ve watched Extreme Couponing it seemed to me like they buy loads of crap just because they can get it for next to nothing. Does anyone really need 100 bottles of barbecue sauce???
