A Plot To Call My Own

I was in Minneapolis, MN last weekend visiting a close friend of mine.  While on a walk, we saw two small corn plots in a front yard.  Being from Indiana and both growing up amongst corn and soybean fields, we were excited to see corn growing outside its normal setting.

This got me thinking….why aren’t more people using the space they have to grow something?  Whether it be a window, backyard, balcony, or community garden any place you can find to grow your own produce, herbs, spices, etc. will be worth your while!

I have stumbled upon a few community gardens here in the city including plots along the lake in areas that were otherwise just grass. There’s a rather nice one at the corner of Ainslie and Kenmore, tucked in among the mid-rises and vintage buildings. Look at those neat rows!!

I have a windowsill garden! I have basil, cilantro, chives, and lavender. I completely agree with using the space you have to make a garden space. I wish I actually had outdoor land that was my own…I would have a HUGE garden :)

I love fresh basil and cilantro! I know I would love to have a big backyard for a garden too :)

I did my own pot gardening experiment this summer in my small backyard and realized that it’s pretty simple. I’m going to try to sneak a few small plants into my dorm room or maybe even fire escape in the fall!My favorite things to plant are fresh mint and basil for cooking.

I have a small backyard and I have one tomato plant and a chives plant. Wish I had more, but I am limited what I can plant. I think I will have a herb garden on the window sill for the winter too.

Hi Mary, Any plants are better than no plants! You will have to let me know how your herb garden turns out this winter :)
