Quality Food Is Portion-Sized

Happy New Year!

This Sunday, my girlfriends and I went out for New Year’s Day brunch at one of my new favorite brunch spots in Wicker Park called Birchwood Kitchen.   They have amazing food and the atmosphere is very cozy and warm.   Some of my friends got breakfast and some ordered lunch…thus brunch :).

After we finished our delicious meal, we commented on how good the food tasted yet how we didn’t feel stuffed.  The portion sizes were perfect.  This got me thinking…isn’t quality food perfectly portioned?  Rarely would you go to a fine dining restaurant and see HUGE portions on your plate.  The portions are small and every bite should be enjoyed slowly.

Big portions are normally cheap and therefore you get more…but that is not necessarily a good thing!  Just think about your favorite chain restaurant or fast food joint, that food normally comes frozen in a bag and is just re-heated right before it hits your plate.  You feel like you are getting a deal, because you get so much food.  However, is that meal really quality food?  WE need to stop thinking that more food means a great deal and that we are getting screwed if we actually have the right sized portion on our plate.

It’s the Parkinson’s Law of food—our appetite expands to consume the portion we’re given. The effect has been to distort our concept of a “portion”!

We really do suffer from portion distortion in America!

Yes, I agree with you!
It is often cheap food that is HUGE portions. I love the idea of tasting and enjoying your food, but not overdoing it!
