The question for the week is, “does anyone drink regular water anymore?”  I mean really?!  The amount of products made for flavoring, coloring or worse energizing your water is continually growing.

OH YEAH!” Even the Kool-Aid man jumped on this unnecessary flavored water bandwagon.

I understand that a lot of these products are calorie-free, but that doesn’t mean that they should replace regular water.  Yes, consuming these products in moderation would be fine.  AND when I say moderation I am suggesting only adding one of these to an eight ounce glass of water once a day or less.

However, if you are looking to add a little FUN to your water try using fruits and/or herbs instead!

Fruit can make a very colorful and tasty addition to any water glass!  Most fruits will work, except bananas.    If you are feeling adventurous try using herbs also.

To get started check out a few of these flavor combinations by The Yummy Life:
ALL CITRUS (no herbs) —  Slice 1 orange, 1 lime, 1 lemon into rounds, then cut the rounds in half. Add to jar and proceed with muddling, add ice & water.
RASPBERRY LIME (no herbs)  — Quarter 2 limes; with your hands, squeeze the juice into the jar, then throw in the squeezed lime quarters. Add 2 cups raspberries. Muddle, add ice & water.
PINEAPPLE MINT — Add a sprig of mint to the jar (you can throw in the whole sprig; or, remove the leaves from the sprig, if you prefer to have the mint swimming around and distributing in the jar). Muddle the mint. Add 2 cups pineapple pieces, muddle, add ice & water.
BLACKBERRY SAGE — Add sage sprig to jar and muddle. Add 2 cups blackberries; muddle, add ice & water.
WATERMELON ROSEMARY —  Add rosemary sprig to jar & muddle. Add 2 cups watermelon cubes; muddle, add ice and water.

Who needs that flavored crap when you have fruit and herbs to spice up your water glass?

Oh, pineapple mint sounds like a tasty option. I love cucumber in my water, so refreshing.

Thanks for the comment Jacky! That combination does sound tasty. My personal favorite is orange slices and blackberries!

Hi Kevin,

Yes. Both tap water and bottled water are similar in terms of safety. It is more of a personal preference.

What do you think of coconut water? Is it a good choice?

Hi Darci,
Coconut water is an electrolyte-laden liquid that can help rehydrate you after vigorous exercise. However, some athletes don’t like the taste.

Hey Brooker – what’s the downside of the flavoring if they’re calorie free and un-energized? IF only B vitamins as the energy, why is it so bad? just a waste of money on artificial products, or is there really a negative health effect of these? Jeff loves these for his water and drinks a ton more water WITH this, so I see the additive as a lesser evil to being dehydrated. I personally like iced tea or a camelback that filters plain water, but I know he’s very different.

The thing is do you really need the added flavor and B vitamins? I believe it is better to practice drinking regular water or flavor your water naturally with fruit.
